The Journey Home – Stop 7: The Law and Freedom

Welcome back to The Journey Home. We’re glad you’ve joined us for this seventh stop on our path of discovery.

So far, we’ve wrestled with deep questions about life, purpose, and faith. Today we turn to a subject that can feel intimidating: The Law of God.

For many, “law” brings to mind restrictions and punishments. But what if Scripture presents God’s law not as a cage, but as a blueprint for freedom? What if it reflects the heart of a loving God who wants the very best for us? Let’s explore that together.

The Foundation of Freedom: Where Does God’s Law Come From?

To understand God’s law, we first need to understand God’s character. Scripture describes His throne as founded on goodness, justice, and truth:

“Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.” Psalm 89:14

Because His authority rests on perfect principles, His law is also perfect—an expression of what is eternally good and right:

“Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” Romans 7:12

The Ten Commandments were given directly by God. He spoke them aloud, then wrote them in stone as the foundation of His covenant with Israel:

“And he declared unto you his covenant…even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.” Deuteronomy 4:13

Yet this was not the first time humanity encountered God’s law. From the beginning, He inscribed its principles on the human heart, giving each person a conscience that whispers the difference between right and wrong:

“Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness…” Romans 2:15

A Mirror and a Guide: What Is the Purpose of the Law?

If God’s law is good, what role does it play in our lives? The Bible uses powerful imagery:

  • A Mirror – The law reflects our true condition, exposing where we’ve fallen short. Without it, we wouldn’t recognize our need for a Savior.
  • A Guide – Like a schoolmaster, the law points us toward Christ, the only one who can rescue us.
  • A Pathway – It shows us God’s will for living a life of peace, joy, and love.

One Law or Many?

The Bible speaks of different kinds of laws, and understanding the distinction is key:

  • The Moral Law – The Ten Commandments, eternal and unchanging, rooted in love for God and love for others.
  • The Ceremonial Law – Rituals, sacrifices, and festivals given to Israel as a temporary teaching system. These pointed forward to Jesus, “the Lamb of God.”

Law and Grace: A Perfect Partnership

Are Christians “under law” or “under grace”? The answer is: both matter, but in different ways.

The law shows us our guilt, but cannot save us. Grace, through Jesus, offers full forgiveness and freedom:

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 3:24

When we accept this gift, we are no longer under the law’s penalty, but under grace. Yet grace does not give us permission to ignore God’s law. Instead, faith strengthens and establishes it:

“Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
Romans 3:31

A New Heart, A New Life

The miracle of grace is transformation. In Christ, we are made new:

“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17

The Spirit changes our desires so that the law is no longer a burden, but a joy:

“I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.”
Psalm 119:47

God’s law becomes the “perfect law of liberty”—a guide into genuine freedom, peace, and love.

The Journey Continues

God’s law is not a prison but a gift: a transcript of His character, a guide to life, and a signpost pointing us to Jesus Christ. It reveals our deep need for a Savior, then leads us straight to Him.
