The Journey Home – Stop 12
Heaven: A Real Place, A Real Hope
Have you ever wondered what comes after this life? Around the world, people have different ideas—reincarnation, a spirit world, or even nothing at all. But the Bible doesn’t leave us guessing. It describes heaven not as a dream or symbol, but as a real place: the very dwelling place of God.
When Jesus taught His followers to pray, He began with these words: “Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name” (Matthew 6:9). Heaven is the place from which God hears our prayers, rules with love, and prepares an eternal home for His people.
What and Where Is Heaven?
The Bible describes three “heavens”:
- The first heaven – the sky where birds fly (Genesis 1:20).
- The second heaven – outer space, where the sun, moon, and stars shine (Psalm 8:3).
- The third heaven – paradise, the dwelling place of God (2 Corinthians 12:2).
This “third heaven” is the paradise Jesus promised to the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43). It is where God’s throne and the tree of life are found (Revelation 22:1–2), and it is the place Jesus said He is preparing for those who follow Him (John 14:2–3).

Who Will Go to Heaven?
Many assume that everyone will go to heaven. But the Bible gently shows that heaven is not simply a reward for all—it is the eternal home of those who have chosen to live in harmony with God.
Scripture describes them as people who do the will of the Father (Matthew 7:21), who seek clean hands and pure hearts (Psalm 24:3–4), and whose names are written in the “Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:27).
The invitation is wide open. Heaven is not about being “good enough” on our own—it is about accepting Christ’s forgiveness and allowing Him to write our names in His book.
When Do We Go to Heaven?
Another common belief is that the righteous go straight to heaven when they die. The Bible describes it differently: the dead “sleep” until the return of Jesus (John 11:11–14; Ecclesiastes 9:5).
The great promise is that at the second coming, God’s people will be raised to life and taken to heaven together:
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
(1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
In that moment, every follower of Christ will be transformed:
“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump… this mortal must put on immortality.”
(1 Corinthians 15:52–53)
While most rest in the grave awaiting this day, the Bible mentions a few special examples—Enoch, Elijah, and Moses—who were taken to heaven as a foretaste of what is to come.
What Will Heaven Be Like?
One of the most comforting promises is that in heaven we will know and recognize one another. Our bodies will be changed, but our identities remain. Jesus, after His resurrection, was touched, recognized, and even shared meals with His friends (Luke 24:39–43). In the same way, we will enjoy real, tangible relationships in heaven.
But heaven is only the beginning. God promises a new earth as the eternal home for His people: “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5).
John describes the New Jerusalem, the capital city of that new earth, in stunning detail (Revelation 21):
- A city of light and beauty, with walls of jasper and streets of pure gold.
- Gates made of pearl and foundations adorned with precious stones.
- A place where there is no night, for the glory of God will be its light.
And beyond the city, a renewed earth where people will build homes, enjoy gardens, and live in peace (Isaiah 65:21–25). Animals will live in harmony, and sorrow, pain, and death will be gone forever:
“God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.”
(Revelation 21:4)
Your Invitation to an Eternal Home
Friend, heaven is not a fantasy. It is a real place, prepared by a real God, offered to real people like you and me.
The Bible makes this simple promise:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
(1 John 1:9)
No matter your past, God offers a fresh start. “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18).
Heaven’s gates are open wide. The question is not whether God wants you there—He does. The question is: will you accept His invitation?
An eternal home of peace, joy, and love awaits.
Coming Home at Last
We’ve walked together through many questions—about life, purpose, faith, and the promises of God. And now, at the final stop, we’ve looked toward heaven—the place the Bible calls our eternal home.
But friend, the journey doesn’t end here. In many ways, it is only beginning. Heaven is not just a faraway dream; it is the destination God longs to share with you. More than that, it is the home prepared for those who choose to walk with Jesus.
The invitation is simple and personal:
- To give your life to Christ, who gave His life for you.
- To follow Him day by day, discovering the peace, joy, and hope only He can bring.
- To continue the journey, not alone, but with God’s Word as your guide.
Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Choosing Him is choosing life—life now, filled with purpose, and life forever in His kingdom.
