The Journey Home – Stop 10
Our Role as Stewards
Welcome to the tenth stop on The Journey Home. Here, we turn to the idea of stewardship—a word that simply means “caring for something that belongs to someone else.”
From the Bible’s perspective, everything we have—our world, our resources, our time, even our very lives—is ultimately God’s gift. We are invited to live as faithful caretakers, using these gifts with love and purpose.
The Foundation of Stewardship
From the very beginning, God entrusted humanity with a special role:
“Let us make man in our image… and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth” (Genesis 1:26).
This “dominion” was never about domination. Scripture reminds us:
“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof” (Psalm 24:1).
Adam’s work in the Garden of Eden was to “dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15)—to tend creation with care. When humanity failed in that trust, God did not abandon us; instead, He promised redemption (Genesis 3:15).
Stewardship begins with this truth: all we have is God’s, and we are blessed when we use it in ways that honor Him.
Stewardship of Talents
Jesus told a parable about a master who gave his servants talents to manage until his return (Matthew 25:14–30). Some used their gifts and multiplied them; one buried his out of fear. The lesson is clear: God has entrusted each of us with unique abilities, opportunities, and gifts—not to hide, but to grow and use for good.
The apostle Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit gives different gifts—wisdom, faith, compassion, healing, encouragement—“for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). None of us has been overlooked. What matters is how we choose to use what we’ve been given.
Stewardship of Time
Time is one of the most precious gifts we have. Every person receives the same 24 hours each day, but how we spend it shapes our lives.
The Bible urges us to live wisely, “redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16). Life is short (Psalm 90:10), and each moment is an opportunity to love God, serve others, and grow in grace.
God even built a rhythm into our weeks: six days for labor and one day—the Sabbath—for rest and renewal (Exodus 20:8–11). Honoring that sacred pause reminds us that life is not just about striving, but about trust, joy, and connection with Him.
Stewardship of Resources
The Bible teaches that the ability to earn wealth comes from God (Deuteronomy 8:18). Because all we have is His, He invites us to use our resources wisely, generously, and faithfully.
One ancient practice was tithing—returning a tenth of one’s increase to God as a sign of trust and gratitude (Leviticus 27:30). Beyond that, offerings were given freely as expressions of love and thanksgiving.
The heart of this teaching is not about amounts, but about attitude. God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). Faithful stewardship opens us to His blessings—not just materially, but in joy, peace, and purpose.
Stewardship of Our Bodies
Scripture says our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). How we care for our health matters, not only for ourselves but also because it honors the God who created us.
The Bible offers timeless wisdom—encouraging moderation, healthy choices, and avoidance of harmful habits (Proverbs 23:31–32). When we live with care, gratitude, and balance, we reflect God’s desire for our well-being: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health” (3 John 2).
Stewardship in Everyday Living
Stewardship is not just about money, talents, or time—it’s about living each day with intention. Paul wrote:
“Whatever you do, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God” (Colossians 3:17).
This touches every area of life—our relationships, our choices, our values, our influence. Whether in how we treat others, what we allow into our minds, or the way we present ourselves, stewardship means living in a way that reflects God’s goodness and love.
An Invitation
At its heart, stewardship is not about rules—it’s about relationship. God has poured countless blessings into your life. The question is: how will you use them?
Imagine living with the deep awareness that everything you have is a gift—your breath, your talents, your opportunities. Imagine offering them back to the One who loves you more than life itself. That is the beauty of stewardship.
Jesus once said:
“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:21).
That joy can begin even now. Today, you are invited to experience the freedom and purpose of living as God’s steward—trusting Him, honoring Him, and preparing for a home with Him forever.
